This article explains AI share of voice marketing metrics. It covers what share of voice measures, why it matters, how to calculate it, what is a good percentage, which related metrics to track, and how Verseodin measures it across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
Share of voice originally measured a brand’s percentage of total advertising spend or media presence in a category.
Research by Les Binet and Peter Field found a statistical relationship between share of voice and future share of market. The article cites a rule of thumb: for every 10 percentage points a brand’s share of voice sits above its share of market, the brand can expect roughly 0.5 percentage points of additional market share growth per year over time.
The article also states that AI share of voice cannot be bought the way traditional media share can. AI systems decide what to name based on content quality, structure, and corroboration from other sources.
Create a fixed set of prompts that reflect real buyer questions. Run them across each AI engine. Count every citation, mention, or recommendation earned by each brand. Divide a brand’s count by the combined total and multiply by 100.
If five brands appear across 200 tracked prompts for 500 total appearances, and one brand accounts for 100 of those appearances, its share of voice is 20%.
A useful baseline is fair share: 100 divided by the number of brands appearing at all.
Verseodin runs tracked prompts automatically across a “universe” of websites and prompts. It provides separate views for different AI visibility metrics.
| Tab | Metric | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| AI Visibility | Visibility ranking and share of voice | Every brand or domain that appeared across tracked prompts, with its share of voice percentage |
| GEO Audit | Citation share | A brand’s percentage of all links that appeared as citations |
| AEO Audit | Mention share over time | Brand mentions as a percentage of all brand mentions, tracked as a trend |
Verseodin breaks these metrics out by engine, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
They are the numbers that describe how much of the AI-generated conversation in a category a brand owns. The article lists share of voice, citation rate, mention rate, trust mentions, and blindspot count.
Add up every citation or mention a brand earns across a fixed set of prompts. Divide by the total earned by all brands across those prompts, then multiply by 100.
Build a fixed prompt panel, run it against each AI engine, repeat on a regular schedule, and measure each engine separately.
You need a fixed prompt list, a defined competitor set, and a consistent way to record whether each brand was cited, mentioned, or both.
Daily tracking is preferred if supported. The article suggests weekly review during active efforts and monthly review for steady-state programs.
