How to Analyze Citation Gaps in AI Search: A Step by Step Guide

A step by step method for finding where AI answers cite competitors and not you: collect comparable answers, check every cited page, confirm the cause, rank the gaps, and verify the fix.

TL;DR

A citation gap means AI answers link to others and never to you. A mention gap means your name is missing from the answer. Track them separately.

Run each prompt several times under fixed conditions, then check every cited page: "cites you", "doesn't mention you" or "not checked".

Confirm the cause, score the gaps, fix the top one first, and rerun two to four weeks later.

Ask ChatGPT which invoicing tool suits a small design studio, and it names a few brands and links a few pages. Yours is on neither list. That is a gap, but not yet a diagnosis.

The instinct is to screenshot the answer where a competitor appears and start writing. That skips the question that decides everything: why you are missing. It could be a review site that never listed you, a page the crawler can't read, or one unlucky run. Knowing how to analyse citation gaps in AI means telling those causes apart before you spend a month fixing the wrong one.

What Counts as a Citation Gap in AI Search and What Doesn’t

A citation gap is a prompt where an AI answer links to sources and none of them is your URL. A mention gap is a prompt where your brand name never appears in the answer text. A visibility gap is the umbrella term for either one.

Citation gap analysis for AI search tracks citations and mentions separately, because an AI can name your brand without citing your site, and cite your page without naming you. The fixes differ too: one earns a link, the other earns a name. Verseodin calls a prompt where both happen a trust mention: the state to work toward. Our guide to AI citation tracking covers how to log both.

Skip these four gaps:

Third party proof for evaluative claims: when a prompt asks who is best rated or most trusted, the answer wants an independent verdict. Your own page can't replace a review site, so earn a review instead.

Low intent informational prompts: a gap on "what is a pro forma invoice" mostly costs you readers, not buyers.

Pages you couldn't verify: a paywalled or blocked page might name you or not. Until you can check it, it isn't a gap.

Prompt variations that would only create duplicate pages: five phrasings of one question need one good page, not five.

Example: one case runs through every section. Kettlebrook, a fictional invoicing tool, wants to be recommended for the prompt "best invoicing software for a small design studio with international clients". Its fictional rivals are Invoxa and Tidybooks, and every number is illustrative.

How to Collect AI Answers You Can Actually Compare

Run a fixed set of 20 to 50 real buyer questions under identical conditions, log the same fields every time, and repeat each prompt. Holding conditions still shows you how much the AI's own answers vary.

Build the prompt set: take questions from sales calls, support tickets and Search Console queries, and tag each by intent: discovery, comparison, pricing, implementation or risk.

Fix the conditions: keep the exact wording, platform, search mode (on), model and location constant, stay logged out, and open a new chat for every prompt. Saved memory and earlier messages can otherwise steer the answer.

Record the same fields: prompt, date, platform and mode, full answer text, brands mentioned, cited URL and domain, and source type.

Repeat each prompt: three runs per platform is a practical floor.

One answer proves nothing. In a January 2026 study, SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI, producing 2,961 responses. The chance of ChatGPT or Google's AI returning the same list of brands in any two responses was under 1 in 100. It is an industry study, not peer reviewed research, so read it as direction.

Example: Kettlebrook tags its prompt comparison and logs three ChatGPT runs with search on and three Perplexity runs, logged out, in one location, each in a new chat. The table omits the date and full answer text.

Kettlebrook is named in 3 of 6 runs and cited in none. That is a citation gap, with a mention gap that comes and goes.

How to Find Where Competitors Are Cited and You Are Missing

To find the gaps in your AI visibility, pool every cited URL from your runs, clean and label them, then open each page and check whether it names you. Pages that keep getting cited without mentioning you are your gaps. This competitor citation analysis takes four moves:

Clean the data: normalize URLs so one page counts once, stripping tracking parameters such as utm_source=chatgpt.com, fragments and trailing slashes. Then label each source as owned, competitor, review site, media, forum or directory.

Check each cited page: search it for your brand name. Mark it "cites you" (no gap), "doesn't mention you" (the real gap) or "not checked" (paywalled or blocked pages, which don't count as gaps).

Sort by ownership: "they own it" is a competitor's page, "nobody owns it" is a neutral page such as a review roundup or forum thread, and "shared" is a directory where several brands hold listings. Ownership sets the fix: a better page of your own, outreach, or a completed listing.

Group recurring gaps: by prompt, topic and platform, and keep platforms separate. SE Ranking's early 2025 study of 2,000 how to keywords found that any two of Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot shared only about 10 to 25 percent of their cited domains.

In Verseodin, the Blindspots view lists prompts with no citations and no mentions where competitors appear. Partial gaps like Kettlebrook's below sit outside it.

Example: pooling the six runs gives four cited sources.

The roundup is the recurring gap: cited in all six runs on both platforms, listing Invoxa and Tidybooks but not Kettlebrook. The forum thread stays unscored, but all three runs that name Kettlebrook also cite it, so it is the first lead to check by hand.

How to Confirm Why the Gap Exists

Test one cause at a time, with one check that would confirm it. First rule out noise: if the gap doesn't recur across runs, it isn't a gap. As a rule of thumb, not a benchmark, count a source as recurring when it is cited in at least half of your runs.

Source

Open the cited third party page: are competitors on it and you aren't?

The roundup lists Invoxa and Tidybooks, not Kettlebrook. Confirmed: the main cause.

Content

Compare your closest page with the cited one for a direct answer, evidence, tables and freshness.

Its features page is generic. Invoxa's studio page answers directly, with a table and a recent date. Contributing.

Entity

Check for inconsistent naming and missing Organization schema or sameAs links.

Three spellings in use (Kettlebrook, Kettlebrook Software Ltd, Kettle Brook) and no Organization markup. Mild.

Retrieval

Check robots.txt, indexing in Google and Bing, and whether the answer is in plain HTML.

OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed, page indexed in both, answer in the HTML. Ruled out.

Prompt

See whether the gap sits only in certain intents or on one platform.

Shows on both platforms, so not a one platform quirk.

Retrieval: OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, while GPTBot, its training crawler, is a separate setting. Your host or CDN must also allow OpenAI's published IP ranges. Check Bing as well as Google, since ChatGPT search sometimes uses other search providers. For its AI features, Google requires only that a page be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Then view the page source: a 2024 Vercel analysis found most major AI crawlers, Gemini aside, don't render JavaScript. It is dated, so test your own page.

Entity: Google says its AI features need no special schema, so treat Organization markup and sameAs links as a clue that ties your names together, not a requirement.

How to Decide Which Gaps to Fix First

Score all your AI visibility gaps and work from the top: treat the list as a leaderboard, not a checklist. Rate each gap from 1 to 3 on four criteria, add the scores for a total out of 12, and fix the highest first.

Buyer intent: how near the question sits to a buying decision.

Recurrence: how many runs and platforms show the gap.

Credibility of the missing source: an independent review site outweighs a thin directory.

Attainability: how much of the fix you control.

This is a working method, not a standard. For a purely numeric ranking, the gap score formula in our guide to brand citation gap analysis multiplies how many competitors a source lists by how often engines retrieve it.

Run two tracks at once:

On site fixes you control: days to weeks. Rewrite, restructure or refresh your own page.

Third party work: weeks to months. PR, review sites and listicles depend on other people's calendars, so start early.

Update before creating: improve an existing page where one fits instead of publishing a new URL.

Example: Kettlebrook scores three gaps on intent, recurrence, credibility and attainability:

The roundup omits Kettlebrook: 3, 3, 3, 2, total 11.

Invoxa's studio page is cited and Kettlebrook's is not: 3, 2, 2, 3, total 10.

An informational gap on the pro forma invoice prompt: 1, 2, 2, 3, total 8.

The roundup ranks first but is slow, so Kettlebrook works both tracks: it turns its existing features page into a design studio page this week, a fix fully in its control, and pitches the roundup editor in parallel. No new page is needed. The informational gap waits.

How to Verify the Gap Has Closed

Rerun the same prompts under the same conditions two to four weeks after the change. Call the gap closed only when your citation recurs across several runs and weeks, and ideally shows up on adjacent prompts or a second platform too.

Confirm the recrawl first: URL Inspection in Search Console, or Bing Webmaster Tools, shows whether the new version has been seen. Rerunning before then tests nothing.

Rerun under identical conditions: same wording, platforms, search mode and number of runs.

Separate real change from noise: our working rule is that a fix counts as evidenced after two checks a few weeks apart each show the citation in more than one run. Answers also move when you change nothing, a pattern called citation drift , so track a similar untouched prompt as a control: if it moves too, suspect drift.

Measure how often you appear, not where: in the SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai data, the odds of the same brands appearing in the same order twice were about 1 in 1,000, so list position is mostly noise. The authors suggest tracking visibility as a percentage across many prompts run repeatedly.

Log each change: record what you changed next to what you observed, so the next audit can tell a fix from a coincidence.

Example: Kettlebrook's completed worksheet row, in order from prompt to result:

Prompt: best invoicing software for a small design studio with international clients

Cited source: toolreviews.example/invoicing, 6 of 6 runs

Gap: the roundup lists Invoxa and Tidybooks, not Kettlebrook

Cause: source (main), content (contributing)

Action: features page rebuilt as a design studio page, roundup editor pitched

Result: week 3, page cited in 2 of 6 runs. Week 6, cited in 3 of 6, all on ChatGPT. Perplexity still 0 of 3, the pitch unanswered, and the control prompt unchanged.

Partly closed is a real result: the on site fix worked on one platform, and the third party gap is still open.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find where my competitors are cited by AI but my brand is missing?

Run your buyer prompts several times per platform, collect every cited URL, and open each page that cites a competitor. A recurring page that doesn't mention your brand marks a spot where rivals are cited and you are absent. In Verseodin, the Blindspots view gives a first shortlist.

Can I analyze citation gaps vs competitors without a paid tool?

Yes. A spreadsheet with the logging fields, 20 prompts and three runs per platform is enough to start. The cost is time: two platforms means 120 answers to log by hand. That routine shows how to analyze citation gaps vs competitors for free, and teams move to a tracker once the prompt set grows.

What if AI cites my page but never names my brand?

That is a mention gap with the citation already won, so run the entity check, not the source check. See how the page presents the brand: the name in the title, opening lines and headings, spelled as on your other profiles. The answer may be paraphrasing your page with no reason to name you.

Do competitor owned pages count as citation gaps?

Yes, but they are fixed differently. A competitor's page is cited because it answers the prompt well, and you can't get listed on it, so the fix is a stronger page on your own site. Log it as "they own it", compare it with your closest page, and update that page.

How is citation gap analysis different from content gap analysis?

Content gap analysis starts from keywords and asks which topics you lack pages for. AI citation gap analysis starts from AI answers and asks which sources the AI relied on and why you weren't among them. Fixes often sit off your site.
